DÝPI OCEAN PAINT
-
Dýpi Ocean Paint is a natural, dead‑flat interior paint free from plastics and solvents. Completely non‑toxic and mineral‑based, it draws on fossilized calcareous algae from Iceland to offer a sustainable alternative to conventional lime paints.
Coloured with stable mineral pigments that resist UV breakdown, Dýpi retains vivid, lasting hues even after prolonged sun exposure. Its alkaline, highly breathable formulation allows moisture to pass through walls, helping prevent surface mould and promoting healthy indoor air.
The finish is rich and nuanced: a soft yet subtly grainy texture created by crushed algae that catches light and shadow, producing depth and variation in tone. Brush type and application technique influence the final appearance, but the paint is applied in a single brushed coat. The result is a warm, natural look with lively texture and enduring colour.
-
The colour palette takes its name from Arnarfjörður in the Icelandic Westfjords, where fossilized calcareous algae are harvested from the sea. Although countless natural hues can be blended into the ocean paint, Dýpi’s signature collection comprises twelve colours that capture the essence of Arnarfjörður. They are:
Svartalogn, Hafblær, Fjörumosi, Sandsúra, Hafleir, Fjörusteinn, Hvítalogn, Brimskúm, Ægisró

Indoors — suitable for all stable mineral substrates as well as for existing alkali-resistant paint, wood, MDF, and metal. The substrate must be dry, clean and free of loose or separating layers (dust, grease, flaking paint, etc.).
Mineral surfaces with uniform absorbency: no primer required; lime paint can be applied directly.
Unpainted or unevenly absorbent surfaces: apply 1–2 coats of Uniwall Primer NF‑21 before Dýpi OceanPaint.
Painted surfaces: sand/mat with 120–150 grit sandpaper, then apply Uniwall Primer NF‑21.
Irregular or mixed substrates (different materials, variable plaster thickness, or patch repairs): prime with 1 coat of Uniwall Primer NF‑21 applied by roller; if the substrate is very absorbent, dilute the primer with at least 10% water.
Non‑absorbent substrates (previously painted surfaces, wood, MDF): thoroughly sand with 120–150 grit before applying 1 coat of Uniwall Primer NF‑21.
Avoid using putty over which mineral paint will be applied, as putty may bleed through.

Dýpi Ocean Paint is available in packs of 2 kg and 4 kg and is coloured using Stoopen & Meeûs powder pigment (5% -20% pigment).
All pigments can be mixed with one another.
• Mix the pigment in the prescribed quantity of water and then gradually add the Dýpi powder
• Mix mechanically for 3-5 minutes to form a smooth, homogeneous substance
• Always prepare sufficient paint for the finishing layer to cover the entire surface. If necessary, stir in between or add a little
water and mix again. N.B.: Adding more water and mixing can result in colour differences

FAQs
Application
1
To achieve the characteristic handcrafted look with Dýpi Ocean Paint you need to paint a little differently than with ordinary acrylic paint. Let your eye and heart guide you — play with textures and roll with small adjustments along the way. Although Dýpi is formulated as a one-stroke paint, a beautiful result is about finding a natural, pleasing imperfection. There is therefore no right or wrong texture.
Remember that appearance can vary with color and substrate. When working with natural materials, brushstrokes often become more visible in darker shades. Many choose to add a few extra strokes here and there until they reach the desired expression. The most important thing is to stay relaxed and creative until the result feels right.
Procedure
Cover the floor with plastic or drop cloths, as material may splatter during painting.
Do not cut in the wall before the main field is painted; that produces a different texture. Instead use masking tape and work Dýpi Ocean Paint directly to the edge.
Use a large brush or a special lime/calc brush. Paint up and down or lengthwise in short or long strokes (for example 60–100 cm). The surface can also be cross‑brushed randomly depending on the texture you want.
Brush pressure is decisive: light strokes yield a finer texture, firmer strokes a more pronounced expression.
Dýpi Ocean Paint can be thinned with water if it should be easier to apply or if you want a more transparent/weathered look.
Paint the entire area in one working session — do not stop halfway before the whole surface is covered.
Tip: Step back occasionally to assess the whole. Small, deliberate extra strokes can make the difference between a good and a personal handcrafted expression.
Protection
2
To maintain the paint's optimal breathability, it should not be protected with a topcoat. However, mineral paints are sensitive to dirt
from contact (grease) and cannot always be touched up in spots without it being visible. Dýpi Ocean Paint can be protected against
stains with the dead flat varnish Uniwall 1KPU Matt. Please note that all protective layers should be applied with a felt roller in an
even and VERY thin layer. Two coats should only be used in demanding areas. Varnishes affect the ecological / environmental
properties and the final color to varying degrees. Uniwall 1KPU Matt has little effect on appearance. It is best to wait until the paint is
completely dry before varnishing. The varnish takes at least 4 hours to dry, depending on the substrate, humidity and temperature.
The surface is completely dry after 7 days. Test the varnish first on a Dýpi paint sample before applying it to the entire surface.
Notice
3
Mix Dýpi Ocean Paint outdoors or ensure good ventilation when mixing. Dýpi Ocean Paint is highly alkaline; therefore, wear
gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection.
